I ordered my Ultra 2020 directly from Roku, as Amazon was again ordered. It arrives on Oct. 16, one day after the release date.
I used it to take over my Ultra 2018 type. I also have a 4K TV to two with Roku Streaming Stick+ as well as a Sharp Roku TV.
I recently tried and restored the Fire TV Cube. So not only will I review Ultra 2020, I'll trigger a comparison. Ultra 2020 is advertised 30 cents faster than the previous version. If only, I could barely see.
It's not worth improving unless speed is just one of your motivations and you already have An Ultra 2018 or 2019. What he brought to the party was support for Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision.
I have a 4K TV and an audio process that supports both so that the upgrade is comparable to mys. I've gotten that Dolby Vision (offered in many Netflix Originals) is superior to standard HDR.
If you're not fussy like I am about getting maximum image quality, getting Dolby Vision can be no problem for you. Fire TV Cube does support Atmos and Dolby Vision, so it's an alternative, of course.
Personally, I prefer the menu process on Roku. I get the Fire TV menu cluttered with ads, and keep navigating around its Prime Video-centric bias. I love Prime Video but I don't like being forced to keep looking at prime video options especially just yet.
Roku is the neutral appearance of the display option. Another problem I have with Fire TV Cube is keeping the audio in sync with the images. At least twice a day I have to unplug the Cube to get the audio synced.
The trick still works, but it's a distraction. I initially had problems with audio syncing in Ultra 2020, but I was able to fix it in Settings. Ultra defaults to audio with "Automatic Detection".
I changed this Audio Setting to "Auto Passthrough" and it solved the problem. The biggest improvement in Ultra 2020 is the remote. It features a sound checking rocker with mute buttons. It has a voice search.
It has four quick access apps: Hulu, Sling, Disney+, and Netflix. In addition, it has two programmable buttons, which I use for quick access to Prime Video and YouTube. This remote is capable of controlling your TV and audio receiver if your TV and audio receiver have HDMI-CEC capable of being turned on.
Most newer devices have HDMI-CEC, but make sure your device does so unless you want a Roku remote to control your processes. Compared to Roku Streaming Stick+, which supports 4K and HDR, Ultra has the option of cable LAN connection not only fast wifi with better range than previous Roku devices.
Cables remain better unless you have the ability. I also get that Ultra fit so it's quite warm, Streaming Stick + so it's too hot. Twice The Stick+ Stream has displayed an "overheat" warning.
It makes me nervous. Finally, Roku devices, like Fire TV Cube, can be controlled with Alexa. Make sure you have downloaded Roku Routine on the Alexa App and after that mobilize "device search" to add an Ultra 2020.
Punchline: Roku Ultra 2020 is an overly good streaming device. This app works faster and better than the apps inside my LG SmartTV. The app is also updated much more often than those installed on the TV.
Ultra 2020 is comparable as long as you have or plan to shop for a 4k TV that supports Dolby Vision and you also have Dolby Atmos sound processes.
Otherwise, Stick Streaming is 1/2 of the price and almost as fast. The Fire TV option will be fine for you unless you mostly watch Prime Video and get comfortable with the Fire TV menu process with all the ads.
